Baby Joy!

I meant to post again this weekend, but then... I had a baby.

Meet the little man:

Put up your dukes.
He is completely amazing. He has instantly changed our lives.

I made something with my vagina that's not gross to look at! Unprecedented!
They have the same little bitchface.
He was born Saturday, 9/24 at 1:09 pm, and I'm happy to report that none of my fears were realized. I did not poop, nor did my butt fall out, even though at many times that felt like the point of the whole exercise. I did not burst all of the blood vessels in my eyeballs. I had a beautiful natural birth in my own home with my mother and my sister by my side. And I know that's not funny, or even particularly sassy, but right now I'm just too in love to care.

Of course, I also let my son pee in his own face on his first day of life, I'm unable to move somewhere discreet when I need to fart, I can't go to a pizzeria because someone might try to knead and toss my belly and cover it with sauce, and my nipples might break off sometime this week. So don't worry, there's lots of fodder for whenever I emerge from this totally surreal, sleep-deprived, sappy, weepy stupidly happy stupor.

I've decided not to use his name on the blog just because I don't want him to be Google-able before he's a week old, and will refer to him by S., which is his first initial. But you guys have followed me for a long time and so I want to tell you his name without typing it. The photo below--an art project I worked on in the weeks before his birth--should do the trick.

I'll be back soon. I have to go... mother, I guess?

  4. That's wonderful! Congratulations! I'm planning the natural birth of my first baby in December, so it's good to hear that my butt won't fall out. Not so worried about the pooping, more worried about vomiting.

Congrats again on a beautiful baby boy!

  26. he's a handsome baby. congratulations!! also, from what i hear, your nipples will recover. don't they make, like, a cream or something for cracked nipples?

    if not, they should.

just be sure to lay off the sauce while breastfeeding.

hot sauce, i mean. it'll upset the little man's sensitive digestive system.

  27. Congratulations Una on your lovely new baby. Had you been considerate enough and waited a couple of days, baby S would have shared my birthday! Never mind, wasted opportunity, please plan it better next time :)

  28. Why didn't I think to put a picture of Ted Danson in my baby's room? Your baby is gonna be so cool.

Oh, and he's ridiculously cute. I mean, I can't stop pulling up his pictures and staring.

    ReplyDelete
  29. He is so cute! Congratulations!!!
P.S. At first I thought you named your son Joy (I know it's stupid; I just woke up and my brain isn't working yet) So anyway, I'm glad you didn't.

Congratulations!!!! And that is a really cool little installation of all the noteworthy men with the same name. Much better than having the name just spelled out on the walls...

But back to the important part: the coolest name-bearer just made it into the world and chose awesome parents. He will manage to drive you nuts from time to time as well, but the happiness FAR outweighs anything else!

    ReplyDelete
  33. AWWwwwww congrats!!! Mommy life is AMAZE-BALLS!!!!! And the little one is completely adorable!!

  45. Welcome to the other side! There is no greater thrill than your first baby. Sheer everything great all at once and forever. Congratulations!
    S. is a wonderful name - strong, masculine, rich in heritage. Very nice.
I see Jeff has the customary new dad goofy dreamy happy face. Fun, isn't it?
Your Dad will be sporting it too.
So very happy for all of you!

  46. Oh congratulations!! Haha, the unavoidable farts...how well I remember that. My husband was under strict instuction that if I gave him "the look" he was to immediatley remove any of his friends from the room who came to visit, lol! Those first couple of days are a real bitch...give it about 2 weeks and you'll feel somewhat human. Much love, S is gorgeous!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Congratulations! He is gorgeous. Our babies are 2 weeks apart, though yours is so tiny compared to mine. He came out a 3 month old. I wish I could say that I didn't poop, but I did...more than once. Now my husband has proof that I do in fact poop.

  50. Is it weird to have complete strangers completely elated over the birth of your child? Because I feel a little weird being so goddamned happy. I've checked your blog the last few days and just KNEW you were off having a baby. At first, I resented you, because today is my due date, and this kid is showing no signs of going anywhere. But then you posted these pictures and I melted into a pile of hormonal, weepy goo. He is beautiful. Congratulations. I hope you scarred the neighbors for life.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Congrats and well done....having kids can be the best thing that ever happened to you.

  54. Una, he is absolutely precious! I am so goshdarn happy for you and Jeff! Love the name collage, and those squishy little cheeks! I'd also love to know how badly scarred your neighbors were, but we'll all understand if it's November by the time we hear from you again! Congratulations! c:

  71. Beautiful! Thank you for sharing his sweet little face! Welcome to the world, S.! And congratulations to you and Jeff. Geez, sounds like I know you or something. But I've been reading for...holy crap, almost 2 years now. I recognize the look of exhaustion/love/pure joy/I need a nice long nap in that picture of you two. :) Again, he's beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Yippee! What a super duper cutie. So happy you were able to have the birth you wanted.

Just put cold raw cabbage in your bra for the soreness. I'm not kidding. My husband mistook cabbage for cauliflower - don't make that mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  76. CONGRATULATIONS! Get ready to embark on the BEST and MOST fulfilling adventure of your life. He is beautiful!!

    ReplyDelete
  77. He is just gorgeous. He looks so much like his dad (are you overjoyed with yourself for choosing to procreate with a handsome man? I was so relieved, when I realized how little of my genes were passed on looks-wise, that my husband is very good looking! Thankfully, the brains are all mine, mwahaha) - and that picture of the two of them is beyond adorable. Best of luck, and that haze of love thing... it'll fade from time to time, and then smack you in the face just as hard as the first time.

  78. Cuuuute.

"I made something with my vagina that's not gross to look at! Unprecedented!"

I have to say that since I don't have children yet and my mom-of-two/nurse sister told me to just resign myself to the fact that I *will* poop during childbirth, I'm incredibly relieved to learn that doesn't happen to everyone. Yay for NOT pooping!

So happy for you and Jeff and your beautiful new baby boy!!

Enjoy every minute, even when your nipples fall off and your baby shits clean across the room. If nothing else, it's good fodder for writing.

Take care and Congratulations again and again!!

  104. Mazeltov! (No, I'm not Jewish. At least not completely. I just think Mazeltov sounds more hip than a simple congrats.) I'm sure you're up to your chapped nipples in advice, but here's one noone seems to warn new mothers about: Beware of projectile bowel movements! I am so not kidding!

  105. Congratulations to you both. Really looking forward to the evolution of your blog now that S. is here to shake things up for you. I'm sure you'll take those thousands of things that we've all been through in those first months and years, and make them far more interesting and entertaining than we, your faithful readers, ever could. Welcome to the club. I can honestly say, 20 months onwards, that it just gets better and better. And better.
